Nationwide demonstration for rent controls planned for April

The London Renters Union has announced a nationwide demonstration scheduled for 18 April, calling for the introduction of rent controls across the UK.

The organisation has invited campaigners to join the protest, which it claims will bring together more than 50 organisations representing renters, workers and housing campaigners from across the country.

Campaign objectives

According to the union’s campaign materials, the demonstration forms part of a broader campaign to address housing affordability. The organisation states that “rising rents are driving record levels of homelessness” and claims that “many of us cut back on essentials just to pay rent”.

The group has drawn comparisons to housing movements in Europe, stating: “Across Europe, housing movements are taking to the streets and winning. Let’s do the same here.”

The union is seeking volunteers to participate in various capacities on the day, including distributing fliers and posters, or assisting with event organisation through phone calls.

Panel discussion

In addition to the planned demonstration, the campaigners are holding a panel discussion this Thursday at Hamilton House in Euston. The event will bring together the London Renters Union and allied groups to discuss the case for rent controls.

The discussion is supported by the launch of a new pamphlet focused on “why rent controls should be among the central demands of the contemporary left”.

The demonstration comes as the rental market continues to face pressure from affordability concerns, though the government has not indicated any plans to introduce rent control measures. The impact of such policies on property investment and rental supply remains a subject of debate among industry professionals and policymakers.
